HM has commenced a substantial project in cataloguing the Looker Newton collection of real estate records dating back to 1879 from once prominent local real estate agents. Until recently T. G. Newton & Co. was this area’s oldest (1879) continuous business.
The collection comprises real estate agency subdivision plans and posters that locate and advertise land and property for sale, as well as ledgers, invoices, receipts and other business documents. They cover numerous decades and range from simple plans to highly decorative posters and maps depicting features of the locality.
These documents, which constitute a record of the early development and expansion of Oakleigh and surrounding areas, include the following examples:
