From July until December 2025 the T.G. Newton & Co. collection will be exhibited at the Monash Federation Centre, the headquarters of History Monash Inc.

T.G. Newton & Co. had its origins in an earlier real estate agency in Oakleigh selling land subdivisions in and around the area from 1875.

Once T.G. Newton & Co. was established by Thomas George Newton it became the most recognised real estate agency in the area. Its well known catch cry was “His name’s Newton – he sells real estate”.

Items from the collection of T.G. Newton archives which was donated to History Monash Inc are now on display, together with background information about the company and Tom Newton himself. These items include subdivision maps, contracts of sale, leases, correspondence, auction notices and ledgers. The collection ranges from 1875 to 1925 and includes hand-written documents, reflecting the language and real estate law of the time. Correspondence to T.G. Newton came from solicitors dealing with settlements of estates, various government bodies and the local Oakleigh Council, as well as lessees and purchasers of land.

Items in the T.G. Newton collection of History Monash Inc have been catalogued and visitors to the exhibition are able to search the collection via computer. This may be helpful to people researching family history relevant to the area between 1875 and 1925.

The exhibition may be viewed for free on Tuesdays until 2 December 2025, between 10 am and 2 pm at the Monash Federation Centre, 3 Atherton Road Oakleigh. Please check this website – News – for any possible changes.
